Deal Area Foodbank is running dangerously low on supplies, the project coordinator has said. This year, the Foodbank has so far given out 16,849 tonnes of food, with only 11,334 tonnes having been donated (Jan to May 2019), compared to 14,851 given out, with 11,334 donated between Jan and May 2018.
This year, the Foodbank has given food parcels to 872 adults and 460 children so far, compared with 749 adults and 462 children this time last year. People come to the Foodbank for many reasons, Sheila explained: “it’s often more than one reason, for example, benefit delays, or cuts, delayed wages, or family breakdown, or sometimes a combination of all these factors mean that a person simply doesn’t have any money left for food for their children and themselves.”
As the Summer holidays approach and school children don’t have access to breakfast clubs, free school meals, and after school clubs for food, I’m worried we are going to struggle to help fill that gap,” she added.
Deal Area Foodbank is open four days a week at five different locations and helps single people, families and anyone living locally who is in crisis. Sheila Ward, Project Coordinator said:”We are currently in a position where we are having to be really careful about how much food we give to vulnerable people because there simply isn’t enough to go around. People here are incredibly kind and generous, and I know they give what they can. However, we’re struggling every week to provide families and single people with food parcels that meet their needs.”
If you want to donate supplies, you can do so in collection bins at the following main locations:
Co-op Sandwich, Aylesham, Mill Hill, Hamilton Road (Deal)
Tesco Westwood Cross
There are also collection bins at most churches in Deal, Walmer, Aylesham and surrounding villages and at many schools in the area.
Sheila said: “If you would like to make a larger food donation, our amazing team of Foodbank volunteers can arrange to collect from your home,” just give us a call at the warehouse Tuesday to Thursday on 01304 728428.
The Foodbank is especially short of the following items:
Tinned vegetables and tinned pulses
